Officer Injured In East Liberty Shooting
EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) – A police officer is recovering after being shot twice while chasing a suspect in East Liberty Sunday morning.
According to police, the incident happened at the Port Authority East Busway parking lot around 3:43 a.m.
Two Zone 5 officers pulled a vehicle over near the intersection of Fifth Avenue and McPherson. With the vehicle stopped, a passenger in the back seat got out of the car and tried to flee the area.
One of the officers chased after the suspect on foot, while the other detained the remaining three occupants of the vehicle.
While trying to elude the officer, the suspect entered a fenced-in area with no place to escape. At that time, he pulled out a gun and shot at the pursuing officer, striking him in both legs.
The officer returned fired and the suspect suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso.
The suspect has been identified as Dante Bonner, 18, of Homewood.
Bonner was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.
The injured officer's name has not been released, but he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital as well and was last listed in stable condition.
He is a two-year veteran, while his partner has been serving on the force for four years. Both have been placed on paid administrative leave.
