PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – USA Gymnastics will hold its 2014 national championships in Pittsburgh. It’s the first major gymnastics competition to be held in the city.
The championships will run from Aug. 21-24, 2014 at CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The meet comes ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Pittsburgh hosted a gymnastics exhibition last fall as part of the post-Olympic tour headlined by members of the gold-medal winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team.
This year’s nationals will be held Aug. 14-17 in Hartford, Conn.
Tickets will go on sale late this summer, but no date has been set.
The USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show will be staged at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
“It is an honor to be selected as the host city for this prestigious event,” said Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh.
The competition schedule for 2014 is as follows:
- Thursday, Aug. 21 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors
- Friday, Aug. 22 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors
- Saturday, Aug. 23 – women’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors
- Sunday, Aug. 24 – men’s gymnastics, juniors and seniors
