Cake Boss Giveaway Leads To Fights, Arrest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Market Square was abuzz and a mess Tuesday as the "Cake Boss" handed out free cakes.

Hundreds flocked downtown to get their free cakes from Buddy Valastro and take pictures with the Cake Boss himself, as he stopped in Pittsburgh to dole out 10,000 free cakes starting at 10:30 a.m.

However, the long lines and crowds proved to be more than some people could handle.

Throughout the event, police had to "quell fights" and "separate people" – even arresting one man.

Police say 52-year-old William Davenport was arrested after he circumvented the line and grabbed a case of four cakes, then tried to leave. Each cake is said to cost about $27.

"This incident stirred the crowd causing alarm and great commotion from the hundreds of people who had been standing and waiting in the very long lines," police said in their report.

Davenport also had three outstanding warrants and was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

He is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, disorderly conduct and bench warrant.
