HOMEWOOD (KDKA) – An officer was taken to the hospital in critical condition following a shooting in Homewood early Thursday morning.

According to police, the incident happened in the area of Apple Street around 1:30 a.m.

“Zone 5 officers were patrolling the area of North Lang and Upland Streets when a car passed them traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction,” Pittsburgh Police Acting Chief Regina McDonald said.

After a brief pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a wall.

The suspect, 24-year-old James Hill, got out of the car and got into a physical altercation with the pursuing officers.

“The actor exited his vehicle and a physical altercation ensued between the officers and the actor. One of the officers deployed a Taser, which had no effect on the actor,” McDonald said.

While running, Hill allegedly pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at one of the officers. One officer was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.

“It was about 15 shots being fired. The other cop came in this direction and said, ‘Don’t move, don’t move.’ They started shooting and in the last five shots, the cop fell,” Tony Harvin, a witness, said.

Sources tell KDKA-TV’s Marty Griffin that injured police officer’s name is Morgan Jenkins and he was shot once in the shoulder. A second bullet went under the vest and hit his spine.

Sources also said that Jenkins gave a thumbs up after coming out of surgery.

Sources identified Jenkins’ partner as Michelle Auge. She was also taken to the hospital with a broken finger.

Augie was once partners with Stephen Mayhle, who was one of three officers killed in Stanton Heights in 2009. She is also a mother of two and graduated from Pitt.

Meanwhile, Hill was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and was last listed in critical condition after being shot multiple times.
