1 Fatally Shot In East Pittsburgh, Victim's Brother In Custody

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –- The man charged in connection with the deadly shooting of his own brother at an apartment complex in East Pittsburgh Saturday morning is apologizing.

Neighbors called East Pittsburgh Police to an apartment in the 600-block of Linden Avenue after hearing an argument followed by a gunshot just before 9:20 a.m.

"When they get there, they find a 39-year-old male suffering from what appears to be a single gunshot wound," said Lt. Andrew Schurman, of Allegheny County Police. "He was taken to a local area hospital where he succumbed to that wound."

KDKA's Kym Gable Reports:

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as 39-year-old De'Arto Rankin of Verona. He was pronounced dead after 10 a.m. at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday.

Police say they then started to look for the man's brother, 36-year-old Andre Rankin. Police say he left the scene following the shooting.

Police were in close contact with the family. They weren't sure if he was armed, and police say they were concerned that Rankin may have been suicidal.

"We do know from his family he had suicidal ideations yesterday, so we have concern that he may hurt himself or hurt someone else today," Lt. Schurman said.

But by early afternoon, Andre Rankin was arrested without incident at a relative's home in Penn Hills.

He expressed remorse to the media while being transferred from police headquarters to jail.

"I'm sorry; I'm so sorry," he said. "Sorry."

Rankin is now charged with criminal homicide and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail. No motive has been released, and no information is available on Andre Rankin's mental history.
