Swissvale Fire Kills 1 Woman

SWISSVALE (KDKA) – At least one person was killed in an early Tuesday morning fire in Swissvale.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started at a home in the 7500-block of Ardmore Street around 6 a.m.

Initial reports indicated that someone was trapped inside the home. When crews arrived, they found a woman dead inside the home. She has been identified as 74-year-old Shirley Lane.

Her son, Dan, was able to get out despite repeated attempts to get to his mother.

Dan Lane told KDKA-TV's Ross Guidotti that he could hear his mother calling for help, but he was unable to save her. Dan Lane said when he opened the door to his mother's room he saw thick smoke and flames.

The fire was made even more difficulty by multiple oxygen tanks inside the home that the woman used.

At one point, firefighters were pulled from building because of water pressure problems and the growing fire. They were eventually able to return and put the fire out. They were also able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby home, which sustained significant heat damage on the side.

While crews were still dealing with some hot spots as of 7 a.m., the fire was seemingly under control.

Dan Lane said Shirley was a wonderful woman, a great grandmother and that they were looking forward to a trip to Florida in the next three weeks.

Bob Lane, the victim's other son, said the family had been living there for more than 40 years.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
