Woman Rescued From Creek During Storm

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A strong spring storm rolled through the area Tuesday night bringing heavy rains, which caused flash flooding throughout the region.

Rising waters trapped one woman in her car in White Oak.

"I had my camera. I carry my Go Pro camera in my Jeep everywhere that I go just in case I come across something like this," Matt Schmitt said.

Schmitt, of White Oak, sure did come across something when Cathy Kress tried to ford Long Run Creek in an attempt to get on Jacks Run Road.

"We thought she was going to make it at first and then it was too much for her. Her Jeep turned sideways, she started floating down the creek," Schmitt said.

"As soon as I got in the water, I was turned around and gone," Kress said.

Schmitt ran to the Rainbow Volunteer Fire Company a few yards away. Kress, with nowhere else to go, kept her cool for the most part.

"There wasn't really any water coming in until it stopped. Once it stopped it, it came up over the hood and that was scary because it buried the headlights and I couldn't see anything," Kress said.

A swift water rescue team arrived and put a ladder to the Jeep, which gave Kress an escape route to dry land.

In case you are wondering, the next time the creek rages Kress won't press her luck.
