Bike Ride Planned To Support Critically Injured Boy

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A special bicycle ride has been planned for this evening in Point Breeze in a show of support for a boy who was critically injured Monday when he was stuck by an SUV while riding bikes with his family.

The 8-year-old remains in critical condition today at Children’s Hospital.

The boy became pinned under the vehicle. Neighbors performed CPR until medics arrived, and then he was taken to Children’s Hospital.

It was just after 5 p.m. Monday at the intersections of North Lexington and Reynolds Streets when the woman’s SUV hit the boy.

“There were three bicycles, and she struck one of them,” said Lt. Craig Campbell, of Pittsburgh Police. “He was out riding with family members and was struck by that gray Jeep over there.”

It was a scene one witness says she will never forget.

“I saw a car stopped with a boy under it, and I got very scared,” she said.

Bike advocates will ride through Point Breeze at 5 p.m. today in a show of support for the boy.

The group will meet at the corner where the accident happened.

There have been numerous accidents in Point Breeze involving a motorist and a cyclist. Often the driver has left the scene, but that was not the case on Monday.

Police say the driver was there when they arrived and she was visibly shaken. No charges have been filed against her.
