Beaver Co. Mother Charged After Leaving 2 Kids Home Alone

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) – A mother in Beaver County is facing charges after leaving two children unattended for several hours.

Police believe the boys were home alone for 8 to 10 hours. They said they found dangerous and concerning conditions inside the apartment as well.

The boys, ages three and five, were wandering around an apartment complex in Ambridge when neighbors heard them calling for their mother around 5 a.m.

"They found two small children a 3 and a 5-year-old I believe, walking around the area unattended. One of the neighbors had stopped to try and locate the mother and they were unable to find her," Ambridge Police Sgt. Brian Jameson said.

Ambridge Police said the boys had been alone for hours and the apartment was not only a mess, but officers smelled gas as soon as they got inside.

"The pilot light was off on the stove and there was an odor of gas in the apartment at the time too. They did talk to the children and one of the children said that the mother had been gone since about 7:30 or 8 o' clock, so looking anywhere from 8 to 10 hours," Sgt. Jameson said.

Police said they found Christine Szouchy in another apartment in the complex with her boyfriend. She told police her sister was supposed to watch the kids.

"We contacted the sister, the sister said she had no idea what she was talking about and had never been up there," Sgt. Jameson said.

Szouchy has been charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of children.
