Get Rid Of Hazardous Liquids On Chemical Collection Day

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) --If you have containers of chemicals that can't be thrown in the trash or require special disposal, Chemical Collection Day lets you get rid of them.

Dave Mazza, regional director of the Pennsylvania Resources Council talked to NewsRadio 1020 about Chemical Collection Day.

This year's event took place Saturday at the North Park swimming poll parking lot.

They collected all the household chemicals that people accumulate in their home over the years, including paints, stains, varnished, auto fluids, antifreeze and cleaning products, among other things.

Anything you can think of that is a chemical product can be safely disposed of for a just $2 a gallon. The PRC's household chemical collection started in 2003, has diverted more than 2.5 million pounds of waste from local landfills.

"It is a testament to the care that people take, that they will go out of their way to come to one of these events to make sure that the material is properly disposed of," Mazza said.

There are other chemical collection days coming to the area, including:

  • May 18 they will be in Cambria County
  • July 20 Venango County
  • July 27 Allegheny County Second Avenue parking plaza
  • September 21 Allegheny County South Park
  • October 12 at Brady's Run Park.
