High School Mourns Teen Killed In Hill District Shooting

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) – Friends, family and classmates are mourning the loss of a McKeesport teenager who was shot and killed over the weekend in the Hill District.

McKeesport School officials said this is the third student this year who has become the victim of a violent crime. Once again today, they are providing emotional support to the students.

At 17-years-old, there's no denying that Dejour Gadsden life was taken prematurely. The McKeesport teen was shot and killed late Saturday night in the Hill District.

For McKeesport High School Principal Mark Holtzman, this is not the first time this school year he's had to face his students with a similar story.

"Unfortunately we've had three students this year that were victims of violent crimes," Holtzman said. "It's a frustrating and unfortunate situation. A lot of times you get students that are crying and upset and very emotional."

Gadsden was shot on White Hill Drive at the Bedford Dwellings in the Hill District. Pittsburgh Police are still looking for his killer.

The teenager described as a popular, social student, was an underclassman and recently enrolled in the school's cyber program.

"Dejour was a young man that I had an extremely positive and many interactions with as well as his family," Holtzman said.

Grief counselors are being provided to the students, but Holtzman said he will take an active role in making sure all the students are coping.

"This thing does wear on me and the professional staff members and members of the community. So, we continue to re-enforce the safety of our school and continue to send the right messages to our students and continue to support them as much as we can," Holtzman said.
