Penguins To Meet Senators In Round 2
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – With an overtime goal by Brooks Orpik in Game 6, the Pittsburgh Penguins advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
Their opponent in the next round? The Ottawa Senators and the series begins Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Ottawa easily dispatched the Montreal Canadiens in five games. It was a hard-fought series that got ugly at times with dangerous checks and even a line brawl in Game 3.
Approximately 2,000 tickets for Games 1 and 2 will go on sale at noon Monday. However, the schedule for the series has not yet been released.
Goaltender Craig Anderson was one of the keys to their success both in the regular season and against the Canadiens.
Anderson only played in 24 games due to a sprained ankle, but posted a 12-9-2 record with a sparkling 1.69 GAA and .941 save percentage. He also recorded three shutouts this season.
During the first round series against the Canadiens, Anderson only allowed nine goals on 180 shots.
Another storyline to the series involves reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson.
During a game on Feb. 13, Karlsson and Matt Cooke raced to a loose puck in the corner. Karlsson saw Cooke coming, initiated contact and Cooke's left skate came down on the back of Karlsson's left ankle.
The Senators and their fans believe there was malicious intent on the part of Cooke. The league, as well as many experts and analysts, disagreed.
Karlsson was able to return to the lineup for the Senators' final three regular season games. During their opening round win over Montreal, Karlsson has one goal and five assists.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams in the playoffs since 2007.
After losing 4-1 in 2007, the Penguins went on to win 4-0 in 2008, and 4-2 in 2010.
As for the regular season series between these two teams? The Penguins won all three.
Game 1 will be Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., but the rest of the schedule has not been released at this time.
