PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Get ready to rev your muscle car or vintage cruiser because the Wexford Starlite Car Cruise is really to roll for the summer.

Roger Van Scoy joined KDKA’s Rob Pratte to talk about the popular car cruise just north of Pittsburgh.

“It started about 13 years ago when Jay Passavant, the founding pastor out at Northway (Christian Community Church), thought his father and him had restored cars when he was a kid and he kind of had a passion for that and he said, we got all this space on a Friday night why don’t we see if we can have a car cruise?” Van Scoy said.

There are a lot of volunteers and vendors to help to make the Starlite Car Cruise the most popular car cruise around. Van Scoy said he and everyone involved from the beginning is surprised of the success and longevity that the car cruise has had.

“It was something we just wanted to give a try, you know, get folks to come out and show them that you can do something unusual and fun at a church,” Van Scoy said.

A lot of people come out to the “Safe environment” bringing families and friends to enjoy the atmosphere.

This year, the upper lot that has been used for years has been bought so the staff will be working with an adjusted space. This means there won’t be as many theme nights this year so that all kinds of different cars and be displayed.

“On a typical night in the summer, your get anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 cars when we had all that space in the area. On top of that, you could get as many as 5,000 to 8,000 spectators,” Van Scoy said.

More and more people are getting into the hobby of restoring cars and it brings generations together.

The fun starts May 24 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the first Saturday cruise ever happens on May 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s going to probably be kind of crazy for the first few weeks as we kind of settle in, find our rhythm for this new space, this is a transitional year for us,” Van Scoy said.

There are plenty of vendors that have some of the best food around. From kettle corn and ice cream to Greek food and American standards the car cruise has something for everyone.

The Wexford Starlite Car Cruise is every Friday from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend and is located at 12121 Perry Highway in Wexford.
