Special Promotions Create Local Gas Price War

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Ask folks pumping gas over this holiday weekend, and this will be the common refrain about prices.

"I think they're enormously too high. They need to come down," says Mario Lewis of Wilkinsburg.

AAA's Bevi Powell says they are coming down.

"The average price in Pittsburgh is $3.57, and that is down significantly from last year," she says.

But it's hardly low -- compared to other states this weekend -- like South Carolina.

"People who travel to Myrtle Beach, [a] very popular destination over the holiday, will be paying about $3.24 per gallon," Powell adds.

But that's not here.

Instead, local motorists have to wade through a variety of gas promotions to find the best deal -- a gas price war of sorts.

Both Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save are offering 20 cents -- not 10 -- off a gallon of gas for spending $50 this holiday weekend at their stores, redeemable at GetGo and Sunoco.

"I don't really care where I go grocery shopping, so if they give you that kind of incentive I'll go there," notes Meghan Foster of Shadyside.

And places like Sam's Club and Costco also sell gasoline at reduced prices, too.

But the greatest discount may surprise you.

Turns out the best deal for gasoline that we found for this weekend was at K-Mart.

K-Mart? Yes, if you're a member of the Shop Your Way rewards program and spend more than $50 at K-Mart, you'll get a coupon, a coupon worth 30 cents a gallon off the price at participating BP gas stations.

K-Mart is running clever, edgy ads to promote their big gas discounts -- and motorists hope it will bring bigger discounts from others.

"It hurts at the wallet most definitely," says Craig Williams of Apollo.
