PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Adams continues to recover in a local hospital today after police say he was stabbed overnight during an attempted carjacking on the South Side.

According to police, 23-year-old Adams suffered stab wounds to his abdomen and left forearm. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital where he underwent surgery.

Adams is now in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say it all started near the intersection of East Carson Street and S. 17th Street. A pedestrian reported the incident to authorities and a police officer found Adams inside the nearby Cambodian Kitchen around 3 a.m.

He had walked there for help after the stabbing, police said.

According to investigators, Adams reported to police that he was standing near his truck – parked along the 1700-block of East Carson Street – when three men confronted him and tried to carjack him.

Police say Adams did not have his keys with him and the situation escalated.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Adams had left his keys with the valet service at the Nakama Japanese Steakhouse restaurant and did not return in time to pick them up before they shut down for the night.

Authorities say one of the men pointed a gun at Adams and another then stabbed him.

The suspects, described as two African American men and one white man, ran from the scene, investigators said.

Adams addressed his injuries on Twitter, saying:

"I had an angel lookin out for me! Ill be ok just gotta fight to get back harder then ever"

Hours later, Adams took to Twitter again, posting a photo of himself from his hospital bed with the hashtag, "#roadtorecovery."

Adams was drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Pittsburgh police continue to investigate.
