Indiana Co. D.A. Raises Awareness About Elder Abuse

INDIANA, Pa. (KDKA) -- The Indiana County District Attorney's Office is trying to raise awareness about elder abuse.

A rally was held Wednesday outside of the courthouse.

District Attorney Patrick Dougherty and several other speakers talked to the crowd about how to recognize both financial exploitation and neglect.

He says more than 450,000 people across the country become victims of elder abuse each year.

"It's important that people understand that not only does it go on – a.) how to avoid it and b.) that if it does happen there is agencies out there that are not only going to investigate, but we're also going to prosecute the individuals that take advantage of our seniors," said Dougherty.

Dougherty says protecting children and the elderly were his two main goals when taking office.
