Flag Day A Forgotten Holiday For Many

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – If you're seeing a lot more red, white and blue today, well, that's because it's Flag Day.

And until Sept. 11, 2001, it was often forgotten, according to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Vexillologist Richard Gideon tells the newspaper that the attacks nearly 12 years ago brought the holiday to the forefront of many American's minds, as well as their desire to display American flags.

Although Americans' enthusiasm seems to have slowed down again since then, the event helped bolster the flag industry, which is still doing quite well, the newspaper reports.

The Post-Gazette reports that flag sales still bring in more than $300 million each year – but that's just half of what the industry was seeing after 2001.

Sound off below and tell us what you think – is Flag Day a forgotten holiday, or will you have a flag up today?
