Man Killed During South Strabane Bank Robbery

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One person has died after being shot during a bank robber in South Strabane Township.

It happened Sunday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. at the Citizen's Bank inside of the Giant Eagle grocery store at Strabane Square.

The Washington County Coroner says 46-year-old Vincent Kelley died of multiple gunshot wounds. Kelley was shot after following the bank robber out of the store and trying to prevent him from driving away.

"He did brandish a weapon, ask for money, money was given to him," said Det. Mike Schidlmeir, "he exited out store and entered a white compact-style sedan four-door."

Friends say Kelley was the kind of person who would step in when something was wrong, which is why he ran after the robber.

"We both heard a scream from the bank," said friend Jared Cameron, "and he looked over, and then he started running towards the bank and then the bank teller said, 'the guy has a gun,' and then he just kept running at him."

Kelley followed the robber out of the store and out back and even tried to enter the suspect's getaway car.

"Then he (Kelley) went to reach for his knife and by the time he had reached for his knife, the guy had reached over the seat with his gun and pulled the trigger six times," Cameron said.

South Strabane Police are investigating the incident and the shooter is still on the loose.

Police say he got away in a white four-door sedan, it will also have red paint inside from one of the dye packs in the bag of money.
