Man Up Run Raises Prostate Cancer Awareness
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's a Father's Day tradition.
The Man Up Run for prostate cancer.
It's an effort to get guys to try and prevent a disease that kills about 30,000 men a year.
They were running and raising money for prostate cancer on the North Shore this Father's Day. An event sponsored by the Obediah Cole Foundation. Obediah Cole is the late father of former Steeler Robin Cole.
Robin Cole was a linebacker in the 1970s for those great Steeler teams. His father died from prostate cancer. Robin Cole and five of his brothers survived it.
"It's something very close to my family," Cole said. "Something very close to me. I am also a survivor from 2004. Boy, I'm getting blessed. I'm glad to be here."
But many of these runners will tell you, a lot of guys don't survive, because they don't get it treated soon enough. A lot of men won't go the doctor.
"Men are normally supposed to be rugged, they're supposed to be tough," Cole said. "It's just like, when men are injured or hurt, they wait till the last minute to tell somebody about it. That's kind of the way we are."
KDKA's Paul Martino says he was honored to help spread the message to get checked for prostate cancer.
Money was raised by the runners pays for prostate screenings in communities where people don't have health insurance. They go to barber shops, YMCAs, even coal mines.
Jerry Bortman's glad to be alive this Father's Day. Doctors caught his prostate cancer in time.
"Prostate cancer's a very treatable cancer," Bortman said. "One of the most treatable cancers. But if you let it go, it's one of the most deadly. It's the second worse men's cancer that there is."
