PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The heavy rain this afternoon is being blamed for a sinkhole that swallowed up part of Perry Highway in West View.
The hole is about 15 feet long, 8-to-10 feet wide and about 20 feet deep.
Police Chief Bruce Fromlak says it’s big enough to swallow a PAT bus.
The hole opened up in a section of the highway that had been recently paved after a storm sewer collapsed under the road last week.
In fact, according to police, workers were in the 6-foot-wide drain under the road when the rain started to fall Tuesday.
They were finishing repairs until their foreman told them to get out.
Crews noticed the road surface begin to move and sink, so they rushed to put up barrels blocking traffic. The hole then surfaced and kept getting bigger.
Police say the section of the road will remain closed at least through the day tomorrow.
