CARRICK (KDKA) – A man riding his bicycle was s struck by a car and killed. Now, his family members are making a plea to drivers everywhere.

John Pearson, 55, was a father to two daughters and a grandfather to five young kids.

“He was a real caring person. He was real down to Earth. He loved to help people. He loved his grandchildren,” Angel Pearson, his daughter, said.

When he wasn’t spending time with family, Pearson loved being outside and most of all, riding his bike.

He was riding on Overbrook Boulevard near Almont Street just a block away from his home in Carrick, when he was struck by a car around 7 p.m. Sunday.

He was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he later died.

“I can’t believe this happened. I just cannot and he was an avid bike rider. I mean, he has been riding a bike for 30 years,” Ramona Klein, his cousin, said.

Overbrook Boulevard is a pretty busy street running through Carrick. Neighbors said the stretch where the accident happened is heavily traveled. They said many drivers fly right through one particular intersection without even looking.

“People a lot of times don’t even stop at these stop signs around here. They’ll come and do like a real quick stop and shoot through and half the time, at nighttime, no one even stops, they just kind of run the stop signs here,” Mike Terleski said.

Pearson’s family members are hoping this tragedy serves as a wake up to people behind the wheel.

“People don’t have patience anymore for people on bikes and the overall message is just for them is to watch out for these bicyclists. It’s good people, they’re not hurting nobody. They’re out there riding their bikes,” Pearson said.

“Please, please, please slow down coming down Overbrook Boulevard/ Stop at the stop signs. This isn’t a raceway, it’s a residential street. I want people to go slow and follow the speed limit because nobody needs to die like that,” Klein said.

Police have not said whether any charges will be filed against the driver.
