PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – There’s a severe thunderstorm watch for the Pittsburgh area tonight.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Beaver and Lawrence counties until 4:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Washington counties.

A thunderstorm warning is in effect for the northern half of Beaver County.

The watch is in effect from 3:40 p.m. today until midnight.

The NWS says winds of 70 miles per hour are possible, as well as large hail as big as 1.5 inches in diameter.

“This is a dangerous line of storms and has a history of producing widespread damage,” The NWS says. “Move into a sturdy building and avoid windows.”

KDKA-TV chief meteorologist Jeff Verszyla also says heavy downpours and frequent lightning are possible.
