Child, 4, Injured After Driving Car Into Heidelberg House

HEIDELBERG (KDKA) – A 4-year-old child was injured after crashing a vehicle into a house in Heidelberg early Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the accident happened in the 1600-block of Washington Street around 9 a.m.

The mother of the little boy involved said her son, Ernesto, loves getting himself in to things he shouldn't. In this case, it was her car.

Run-over bushes and tire marks show the direction of travel.

Witnesses said they heard someone revving a car's engine and then, tires screeching. Seconds later, they heard an enormous crash.

A neighbor who heard it all dashed out only to see the Ford into the side of his next door neighbors' cement porch. Smoke and steam were pouring from the vehicle.

As he approached, he didn't see a driver. Then, he saw the boy amongst the deflated airbags. The man who didn't want to be identified said the child looked up at him and said, "I'm sorry."

The child's mother, who spoke to KDKA-TV's Ross Guidotti off camera, said her boy snuck out of the house with the keys and was, "going out to get breakfast."

When asked where she was, she would only say she was, "inside."

The home hit suffered minor damage and the child suffered a brush burn to the head from the airbags. He was sent to the hospital for observation.
