Police: Drunk Man Tried To Break Into Jail
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Most of us are familiar with a jailbreak, but how about a "jailbreak-in?"
One local man is under arrest after allegedly taking on such a stunt.
The incident happened at the employee entrance of the jail, about 10 p.m. Thursday night.
Police say 73-year-old Deuene Hickman of Pittsburgh -- who was clearly intoxicated -- tried to break in at the employee entrance of the jail and that he tried to follow a nurse as she came to work.
The incident report describes police officers were "dispatched by county communications to the Allegheny County Jail for a male who was breaking into the jail."
"What's wrong with him?" asked Daiah Hunter. "And where did he thing he was going to go when he got into the jail?"
Hunter was at the jail visiting a friend when she heard about the break-in.
"That's why he's in there now, he did something dumb," she said. "That's just dumb."
It's been decades since the 1960s Andy Griffith show portrayed Otis the "town drunk" checking in and out of jail.
There has never been a break-in at the Allegheny County Jail.
In fact, this situation wasn't the least bit comical. According to police, suspect Deuene Hickman had two knives in his pants when he was arrested, and tried to attack a police sergeant.
Bebe Latham who was visiting her boyfriend was floored by the attempted break-in.
"I don't understand where he was going," she said. "The doors are locked and they, he got knives. He was drunk, I don't understand."
