Police Searching For Man After Escape From Mental Health Hospital

DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Police are searching for a man after he escaped from a Westmoreland County mental health hospital on Tuesday.

According to officials, this took place at Torrance State Hospital in Derry Township around 6:10 p.m.

The escapee has been identified as Steven Michael Barron, who was committed to the hospital for a number offenses.

He scaled a high chain link fence and ran into a wooded area adjacent to Torrance Road and a nearby railroad area.

The ground search was done by state troopers and law enforcement agencies. They brought out K-9s, but were unable to locate him after a three-hour search.

He has a prior arrest warrant pending for an unrelated offense. Barron is described as having a volatile personality and is believed to be proficient with knives.

He is described as a white male, standing about 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighing 170 pounds with reddish short hair and hazel eyes.

He was last seen wearing black pants and a dark blue shirt.
