Chocolate Sculpture Now On Display At Sarris Candies

CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- Sarris Candies of Canonsburg has produced tons of chocolate over the past half century. But this is a new one.

Garfield artist Heather Joy Puskarich, a grad student at Alfred University in New York, has created a reclining white chocolate sculpture of herself.

"We actually took an impression of her body, made a mold out of it," says retail operations manager Norm Candelore. "It came out with 350 pounds of white chocolate. This is actually Heather Joy, as you can see right here. Tiny little girl. There's actually 350 pounds of chocolate right here. I don't think Heather weighs quite that much."

The artist/model teamed up with candy maker Bob Veras to sculpt fine detail, like the hair and the eyes. Employees marveled at the painstaking process.

"Carving the lines in, the detail work she did, the time it took the two of them to do this," said candy maker Regina Peeples. "She had a lot of patience."

The sculptor does much of her work in glass, focusing on what she calls "elements of desire and beauty." Her latest work is getting rave reviews from customers.

"I've never seen anything like it and the detail's really, really cool," one girl said.

The scrumptious sculpture is will remain at Sarris's till Sept. 1, at which time it begins a national tour. But employee Regina has other ideas.

"I think it should stay. I like it a lot," she said.
