Man Facing DUI Charges After Beltzhoover Crash

BELTZHOOVER (KDKA)  - A man was injured after he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed near a Duquesne Light substation in Beltzhoover early Thursday morning.

According to police, the crash happened around 2:22 a.m. on East Warrington Avenue. The driver allegedly lost control and the Toyota Tacoma ended up wedged between a building and a telephone pole.

"There was a Toyota Tacoma that crashed into the Duquesne Light power station down in the 100-block of East Warington Avenue. It was witnessed by an off-duty police officer, who saw the crash," Pittsburgh Police Lt. Bill Mathias said.

The crash shorted out some power lines running up the telephone pole. Some people did lose power and part of the vehicle caught on fire.

"He hit the pole so hard that it knocked power out in Brookline," Mathias said.

The driver took off from the scene, but he was captured a short time later by Pittsburgh Police. He has been identified as Dennis Cercone, 27, of McKees Rocks.

Police said Cercone was driving under the influence at the time of the accident.

Eight hours after the accident, with the help of a Duquesne Light truck and flatbed, the pickup was finally freed.

"If I were to try to do what he did purposely, I wouldn't be able to pull that off. The way he put that truck in between the pole and wedged it next to the building," Mathias said.

Cercone went to the hospital for treatment for wounds suffered after shattering the windshield with his head and face. None of his injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

Cercone is now facing driving on a suspended license, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident charges.
