Man Found Lying In The Road In Carnegie Dies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police and forensics investigators were called to Carnegie overnight after a man was found lying in the road.

He was found on North Bell Avenue right outside the extended stay hotel where officials believe the 53-year-old man was living for several months.

He was found unconscious and bleeding in the street and was later taken to Allegheny General Hospital where he died.

KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson Reports:

It happened around 12:30 a.m. when passing motorists spotted the man in the road and called police.

Police say the circumstances around his death are suspicious.

"We have no witnesses," said Carnegie Police Sgt. Jeff Kennedy. "The only witness we have so far is the man who found him laying on the side of the roadway."

Officials say when the man was found, he had severe head trauma, as well as trauma to his chest and trouble breathing.

"My officers called me in the middle of the night and they described the head injuries as life-threatening head injuries at that time when they were on scene," Kennedy said.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened. They did find a show near the scene in some bushes, but it's unclear if it came off due to a car accident or from the man falling down the hill.

However, they do know he was not stabbed beaten or shot to death.

One thing that stands in the way of it being a hit-and-run is the lack of debris that would have been left behind from a damaged vehicle.

Allegheny County Police and Carnegie Police are investigating -- they're hoping an autopsy will piece together the story.
