PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – It’s the question that gets raised every year when the Steelers report for training camp, “Will this be the last year for Dick LeBeau?”
The Steelers Defensive Coordinator talked with Joe Starkey of Starkey, Miller and Mueller and gave an answer to that very question.
“I give you the same answer,” he said. “I just go one year at a time. I feel great. They still want me to do it and the defense is productive. As long as those conditions exist and I don’t feel like I’m holding them back, I love what I do, I love these guys, I love the Steelers. Whenever the day comes, it’s going to be a tough one, so I just assume hold it off for a while.”
LeBeau addressed the Steelers defense that finished first in total yards, but was lacking the splash plays.
“I think as long as you’re low in total points and low in total yards, you’re playing pretty good defense,” he said. “We look at the areas that we were a little short and we try to focus on those. There are areas that we always focus on but we are putting added emphasis on them because statistically we were down in those areas a little bit.”
The Steelers spent two high draft picks this year to bring in Linebacker Jarvis Jones (first Round) and Safety Shamarko Thomas (fourth Round) and LeBeau shared his thoughts on them and if they’ll be able to contribute right away this year.
“We’re pleased with what we’ve seen so far,” he said. “I thought they both did fine for the opening game. We obviously like them or we wouldn’t have drafted them. I think that they have an opportunity to be good NFL players and we’ll see where they take that opportunity.”
Things wrapped up with LeBeau giving his thoughts on how Troy Polamalu looks this year, and how often he updates his defense to stay ahead of the offenses across the league.
