Washington County To Undergo Property Reassessments

WASHINGTON COUNTY (KDKA) - Washington County commissioners have decided to go ahead with plans for a county-wide property reassessment.

For the first time in 30-years, homeowners of some 116,000 properties in Washington County could have their property taxes raised, or lowered.

A firm will conduct the assessments over the next three years thanks to a court order.

"I'm not too happy with it, we pay enough taxes already," said one Washington County homeowner.

The firm is the same firm that conducted reassessments in Allegheny County. However Washington County Administrator Scott Fergus says don't expect the same mistakes.

They will be using professional data collectors, and say they have learned from Allegheny County's mistakes.

The reassessments follow a lengthy court battle, in which two school districts sued to get the reassessments.

Washington County also says homeowners will have the chance to attend an informal hearing before their new assessment is set in stone.
