Police: Man On Probation Hits, Kills Jitney Driver & Drives Away

LEETSDALE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after one person was killed in a hit-and-run accident early Sunday morning in Leetsdale.

According to police, the accident happened on Ohio River Boulevard near Maroonis Lounge around 3 a.m.

A jitney driver, 67-year-old Charles Britt of Penn Hills, was bringing passengers to Pittsburgh from Beaver County, when he pulled over and got out of the vehicle to argue with one of the passengers.

When he got out, another vehicle hit him and kept going.

The white SUV the that hit Britt was damaged in the process.

Later, a police officer noticed the SUV and damaged bumper and pulled over the car. When asked about it, the driver, 41-year-old Shontelle Harvey of Moon Township, said it was from an old accident and that he was visiting a friend.

A short time later, a police BOLO mentioned a white SUV with front-end damage.

Police say Harvey told them he didn't see Britt and didn't mean to hit him. Police also say there was a strong odor of alcohol.

Britt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also say Harvey told them he was celebrating his birthday last night and didn't want to stop because he was already on probation.

He is currently locked up in the Allegheny County Jail on multiple charges.
