Woman Jailed, Accused Of Harming Son For Attention

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local woman's in jail tonight, charged with harming her child in order to get attention.

She was caught after employees at Children's Hospital became suspicious.

The criminal complaint only identifies the little fellow as John Doe.

But police charged his mother, Lauren Ruth Buzard with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of children after surveillance cameras at Children's Hospital caught her in the act.

Doctors at the hospital reportedly got involved in the 6-month-old boy's case back in May.

At the time, it was for an unknown illness. He would get better, then get sick again with no explanation.

So Buzard and her son were monitored by surveillance cameras – and according to the criminal complaint, the cameras found a child that was supposed to be healthy, but could have died because of medical complications, infections or procedures.

Cameras showed Buzard tampering with the boy's feeding tube and IV line.

"She also appears to water down the boy's diaper and rub fecal matter on his sleeping pad," the criminal complaint said.

The complaint goes on to say the "Mother's caught on tape adding water to diaper at sink, then reporting to medical staff he had a 'big blowout.'"

After seeing Buzard's behavior on camera, doctors were able to properly treat the boy, remove his mother from the room and contact CYF.

No one answered the door at the Buzard home Monday when KDKA attempted to get a comment.
