Cal-U Football Player Suspended After Arrest For Alleged Assault

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A California University of Pennsylvania football player has been suspended from the team after he was arrested over the weekend.

Claudy Mathieu, 20, of Philadelphia, is being charged with assault after a fight broke out near campus.

Police arrested him just after midnight on Saturday near the Subway restaurant on Third Street in California.

Mathieu, a freshman football player, allegedly punched another man, which knocked him to the ground and then continued to attack him.

"It's shocking," teammate Dante Harvey said. "I just don't understand what's going on."

According to the police criminal complaint, Mathieu was punching Mashkal Ibrihim. Ibrihim was taken to the Mon Valley Hospital with a laceration to the head.

Many students are trying to figure out how this happened to a student who made the dean's list last spring.

"It's really surprising," said junior Samantha Brown. "I wouldn't picture him to do that."

A Cal-U spokesperson said Mathieu has been suspended indefinitely.

He is being held in the Washington County Jail on $30,000 straight bond.
