PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Navy’s top officer, Admiral Jonathan Greenert and his wife, Darlene, escaped injury today in the mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.

A dozen people were killed in the rampage, and police shot and killed the alleged gunman.

The 60-year-old Greenert is a Butler County native, and he graduated from Butler High School in the early 1970s. He went on to graduate from the Naval Academy in 1975.

Greenert’s sister, Henrietta Paserba, still lives in Butler.

She told KDKA-TV’s Ralph Iannotti Monday that her brother and his wife met in Hawaii, where she was also serving in the Navy.

The couple has three grown children, none of them were at the Navy Yard Monday when the shooting took place.

Rep. Tim Murphy, of Upper St. Clair, said Monday that he’s been to the military base many times, adding that the facility is not far from the Capitol Building.

Murphy, a psychologist, was in his home district today. What’s especially troubling to him, he said, was the fact that there are secure gates at the Navy Yard, with armed guards and everyone has to show an ID to get in.

A motive has not been determined.
