Castle Shannon Fire Leaves 1 Dead

CASTLE SHANNON (KDKA) - One person is dead after an early Thursday morning fire in Castle Shannon.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started just before 4 a.m. at a duplex in the 900-block of Sleepy Hollow Road.

"These are all duplexes. Upon arrival, we had heavy fire coming out the first floor, the front door area," Castle Shannon fire Chief Bill Ruffner said.

KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson Reports:

Nearby neighbors, Darlene and Craig Mrazek, were woken up by the sounds of the fire and glass breaking.

"I heard glass breaking and we got up and went outside to see what it was. He went to the front door. I went to the back door," Darlene said.

KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson Reports:

When a neighbor pulled the victim from the house, he assumed it was the elderly woman who lives in the home. The body was so badly burned he could not determine who it was.

"I tried the door, it was unlocked and I [saw] somebody lying there a few feet in the door, so I went in and pulled that person out, but it was too late," Craig said.

The victim has been identified as 75-year-old Donald Dyson.

Thankfully, the elderly woman was not at home. Neighbors said she has medical issues and was already in the hospital.

The neighbor suffered some burns to his hands, but he's expected to recover.

The fire chief said the victim had medical issues and there were oxygen tanks and other medical devices inside the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
