Ambridge Fire Leaves 1 Dead, At Least 5 More Injured

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One person has died and five others were taken to the hospital after an apartment building caught fire in Ambridge.

It happened before 5 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 200-block of First Street.

Authorities say a 58-year-old woman was found dead in a hallway. They think she died while trying to escape.

Several people were also seen jumping from windows trying to escape the fire. It turns out a woman on the third floor had no idea there was a fire, but when she realized what was happening, had her son put a mattress on the ground so that residents could jump.

"The lady on the third floor was screaming, 'get us out, get us out,'" said neighbor AJ Mixter. "And my first instinct was jump and she said, 'I can't,' I said oh yes you can."

The woman and her two young children jumped from the building.

Officials say it was a big fire.

"You got here, there was smoke coming out of the top of the building," said Ambridge Police Chief James Mann. "Smoke out of the north end of the building. There was a fire started in apartment 2D."

About 20 people have been displaced by the fire.

It's unclear still how the fire started.

The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the fire.
