UNIONTOWN (KDKA)- Police in Uniontown are investigating a shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead.
It happened around 7:30 Thursday night inside a home on Murray Avenue.
Police say 17-year-old Darrell Ross was shot in the head. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, where he later died.
Ross played on the Connellsville football and baseball teams and was well-liked on and off the field.
“He had the ability to light up a room and make people, even strangers, feel comfortable,” says Connellsville Football Coach and Principal Dave McDonald.
Ross and McDonald were especially close, with Ross even spending holidays with McDonald’s family.
“Darrell and I would tell each other we love each other,” he says.
McDonald rushed to Ruby Memorial Hospital last night to say goodbye.
Ross has been attending Connellsville High School for the last two years. He lived with his grandfather, the mayor of South Connellsville.
Connellsville Superintendent Dr. Dan Lujetic says the tragedy has affected the students and the adults of the school district.
“We’re a very tight-knit group here and the adults are having a tough time here just like the kids are,” he says.
Police found a gun in an alley outside the house and found 20-year-old Hasani Simpkins hiding from police.
Simpkins was taken into custody after the shooting. Police tell us that he confessed to pulling the trigger of the stolen gun. Simpkins has been charged with criminal homicide.
Uniontown Police Lt. Wayne Brown says no motive has been discovered at this time.
