Injuries Reported After Garbage Truck Crashes Into Charleroi Home

CHARLEROI (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a garbage truck crashed into a house in Charleroi Friday afternoon.

According to emergency dispatchers, the truck crashed into a home in the 600-block of Conrad Avenue in North Charleroi shortly after noon.

The driver of the truck was not hurt but the passenger was taken to the hospital.

Justin Harrington, who rents the house, says it's lucky that no one was home at the time of the crash.

"Thank God. As soon as my neighbor called me, I just thought thank God no one was in the house," he says.

Workers for County Hauling were collecting trash just up the street from Harrington's home.

The driver of the truck lost his brakes and the truck starting rolling backwards down the hill.

Neighbor Jamie McGavitt watched it all happen.

"The truck started barreling down. The driver jumped out, the passenger jumped out, and then there was the big crash," McGavitt says.

The garbage truck smashed into a refrigerator on his front porch and pushed it into his flat screen television in the living room.

"I'll have a panic attack later. Right now, I just want to know that my pets are ok and what we're going to do next," Harrington says.

In the mean time, the Red Cross is assisting Harrington and his family with food, clothing, and shelter.

The specific cause of the crash is still under investigation.
