Washington, Greene Counties Prep For More Snow, Ice
CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- On Interstate 79 south near Canonsburg in Washington County, a PennDOT truck paves the way, not because of a massive amount of snow yet, but to keep ahead of what is to come.
The truck follows the interstate, and then follows interstate alternate routes like Route 519.
"We use a material called salt brine," said PennDOT's Adam Smith. "If we can get it on the road beforehand, if it's a dry road, to stop the ice from adhering, so we can get some salt and anti-skid on the road."
KDKA's Harold Hayes: "But if its already wet, that's a little more tricky?"
Smith: "It depends on the temperature. There's a lot of variables that come into play, and roadway elevations and wind patterns that affect the roadway the way the road freezes."
Within a storm that can bring a little bit of everything, some folks in Waynesburg, Greene County, are more concerned about ice.
Adam Trump oversees transportation logistics at a gas rig operation.
"I'm in charge of making sure that the guys that are running the rigs get up there safely and get down safely," said Trump, a gas rig worker. "And ice and snow, either one, they're both… ice is probably worse than the snow. If there's ice, then there's nothing they can do."
