Friends, Family Remember Connellsville Teen Killed Last Month

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Family and friends came together Tuesday night to remember a promising high school football star who was shot and killed.

Darrell Ross played football and baseball at Connellsville High School. Police say he was shot in the head last month by 20-year-old Hasani Simpkins.

And well over 100 people showed up to remember Ross outside the high school. They released balloons in honor of the high school student who was known for his star quality on the field, but more importantly his energy and inspiration off the field.

"He had a natural way to lift people up," said Connellsville High School Principal and Football Coach Dave McDonald, "and make them feel special and it was a wonderful tribute to him and his family and everybody that took part in it – in his life."

Song, speeches and photos told the story of a short life taken away by violence.

Ross' family, including his grandparents, were also at the event.
