Springdale Police Officer Caught On Camera Sleeping On The Job

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An investigation is underway after a Springdale police officer was caught on camera, sleeping in his squad car.

The KDKA Investigators obtained the videotape of Springdale officer Aaron Scott asleep behind the wheel of his squad car December 5th.

It was just after 1 a.m. when the video was taken.

Springdale's new Police Chief calls it upsetting.

Chief Julio Medeiros told Marty Griffin, "I see a tired officer, who's obviously sleeping, and putting himself potentially in harms way. And it's of concern to me."

The person videotaping the sleeping officer even shines a light on him, and he does not move.

Chief Medeiros says Officer Scott was working the overnight shift at the time of the incident.

"It's a very big concern to me for officer safety, and again for the public. What's happening when that officer who's out to be patrolling is in need of rest and not performing his duties?" Medeiros says.

This video the latest controversy regarding the 10-man Springdale Police Department.

Former Officer Mark Thom plead guilty to Federal civil rights violations, admitted to punching a handcuffed man, and shocking him with a taser.

Thom is being sentenced in February.

Former officer David Walton resigned a few weeks ago.

He's accused of having sex in or near his police vehicle while on duty.

At least four Springdale police officers have been the subject of a local, state, or Federal investigation in the last year.

Having been hired just a few days ago, Springdale's new Police Chief has a message for his officers.

"It's not going to happen under my watch, and if it does, it will be dealt with the harshest of discipline under the law."

As for officer Aaron Scott, who was seen sleeping, Medeiros says he is a good officer, who also works for another department, and has offered to resign.

Chief Medeiros says he won't make a decision on Scott's future until a full investigation has been completed.
