Man Dies After Allegedly Attacking UPMC Shadyside Doctor

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - City homicide detectives are looking into a death at UPMC Shadyside Hospital Monday night.

Ricardo Martinez, 38, was pronounced dead at the hospital around 10 p.m.

Martinez's mother said he went to the hospital for breathing problems.

She was told that after receiving breathing treatment, her son attacked a doctor and had to be handcuffed and subdued by security.

"After he had the breathing treatment, they say he grabbed hold of a doctor, and collapsed on the floor," Marsha Vento says.

He died a short time later.

While in handcuffs, face down on the floor, police say Martinez became unconscious.

Investigators haven't ruled out possibility of a heart attack, and an autopsy has yet to be completed.

Martinez was described as a big man, about 6-foot-2 and 350-pounds.

His family says he was kind, but not aggressive.

"He was a gentle giant. Sweet, and definitely a family man," they said.
