SHALER (KDKA) – The driver of an SUV was injured after crashing into a building in Shaler early Thursday morning.

According to police, the accident happened in the 1100-block of William Flynn Highway around 2:15 a.m.

The SUV went off the road, sheared off a telephone and crashed into the side of the Glenshaw Glass building.

A Shaler Police sergeant discovered the accident after seeing a clump of grass in the road. The sergeant turned around to investigate and found the vehicle as it was starting to catch on fire.

“They had fire extinguishers in the vehicles, put the fire out and were able to extricate the gentleman with EMS and saved him,” Shaler Police Chief Bryan Kelly said.

The driver was taken to Allegheny General Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.

He has been identified as Matthew Connolly, 25, of Allison Park.
