Police Investigating Downtown Restaurant Break-In

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a thief smashed his way into a Downtown restaurant and tried to make off with the cash register.

According to police, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday at the Palmyra Restaurant in the 400-block of Smithfield Street.

The burglar broke into the cash register and stole $300.

"We have to buy a new cash register and repair the window. The money they took is nothing," owner Mario Moussa said.

Mario has operated several restaurants in the Downtown area, but said this is the first time he has ever experienced a break-in.

"We're working hard to make money, especially this month. They are working hard too to get our money," Mario said.

The restaurant wasn't the only business burglarized this weekend. Police said someone broke into the Macy's department store nearby and stole several pieces of jewelry.

"Maybe it's the same guy, maybe a different guy, I don't know. The world is full of bad and good people. The good thing is the good people are more than the bad people," Mario said.

Mario said he loves Downtown people and he won't let this crime affect his business. But, he also said he will look into purchasing a video surveillance camera system in the future.
