Former Part-Time Ambridge Cop Charged In Drug Investigation

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) -- Andrew Wanto, 29, is in trouble with the law and out of a job in Ambridge.

Wanto, a part-time Ambridge police officer, quit his job after Ambridge Police Chief James Mann asked for his resignation.

The resignation follows a months-long investigation by the Pennsylvania Attorney General who has charged Wanto with both buying drugs and passing on details about investigations to local drug dealers.

Mann said he was both disappointed and saddened by the charges.

He turned the case over to the Attorney General's Office several months ago when Wanto's name came up in an unrelated drug investigation.

Former Ambridge Mayor Carl "Buzz" Notarianni told KDKA-TV News that he was shocked by the charges.

Notarianni said he swore Wanto into office four years ago, adding, "I would have believed aliens were attacking Ambridge before believing this [about Wanto].

Wanto's father is the police chief in Leet, a small town also in Beaver County.

Wanto has been released from custody on $25,000 unsecured bond.

He has a hearing next Tuesday.
