Firefighters Brave Elements While Battling Beaver Falls Blaze
BEAVER FALLS (KDKA) - Firefighters faced flames and frigid temperatures while responding to a house fire in Beaver County Tuesday morning.
According to officials at the scene, the three-alarm fire broke out at a home on Fourth Avenue in Beaver Falls around 4 a.m.
"At one point, we had crews on the third floor and the fire did deteriorate very quickly and for a moment, were nearly trapped in there. We quickly knocked the fire down and got those firefighters out of the third floor safely," Beaver Falls Fire Chief Mark Stowe said.
The third floor wasn't the only problem.
"Conditions on the second floor deteriorated very quickly. The fire spread into the second floor followed by it spreading into the third floor rapidly," Chief Stowe said.
The residents of the home got out safely, but one of the big concerns was the safety of cold, wet firefighters.
That's where the Conway Volunteer Fire Department stepped in with their warming tents.
"We come out in all kinds of weather conditions. Obviously, with as cold as it is now, it's very important. These guys are coming out of the building covered in ice. Standing out in the elements is not good for that," Brandon Galderisi said.
It is also a warm, dry place for the medics to work.
Internal temperatures of the warming tent tend to stay at 65 to 70 degrees and while we aren't thinking about it this time of year, it can be air-conditioned for use in the summer.
