Mass. Woman Donates 3 K-9 Vests To N. Huntingdon Police

NORTH HUNTINGDON (KDKA) - North Huntingdon's three K-9 officers, Nero, Colt and Vegas, now have bulletproof and stab-resistant vests.

North Huntingdon Sgt. Kari Bauer says a Massachusetts woman donated money for the vests through Vested Interest in K-9s, an organization that provides vests for police dogs.

"We wear vests, the dog wears his vest," Sgt. Bauer said. "Unfortunately, we can't leave them on him all shift. It weighs about four or five pounds."

The police department says the vests are both bulletproof and stab resistant. They cover all of the dog's vital organs and have protection on the front shoulders and on the belly.

The vests run about $2,400, which is too expensive for many small police departments.

"I applied for the grant, two days later after they received the paperwork, I got a phone call that we got three vests here at North Huntington," Sgt. Bauer said.

Sgt. Bauer says each vest is embroidered with the name of a relative the Mass. woman donated in memory of.
