Morning Commute Hampered By Icy Conditions

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It was a tough morning for drivers as a mix of rain and sub-freezing surfaces created icy, treacherous roadways.

Icy conditions were reported on roadways all across the region.

East of the city, the East Busway was a sheet of ice. At one point, buses and police were urged to stay off the Busway while crews salted the road.

Not far away, a police vehicle was involved in a crash on the Busway near the Neville Street onramp, close to the Bloomfield Bridge.

In Banksville, several drivers had trouble.

The driver of this van hit an icy patch on Goldstrom Avenue near Banksville Road.

NewsChopper 2 was up over the scene, as emergency crews were there.

North of the city, there were at least two accidents on Interstate 79 near Zelienople.

One car slid off the highway and the vehicle had to be pulled out by a tow truck.

Traffic was able to get by, but drivers were taking it slow.

Salt shortages in the area made the ice situation even more hazardous.

The ice was caused by rain falling on cold surfaces.
