PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Pittsburgh has hit No. 15 on a new chart that ranks how expensive cities are for “yuppies” to live in. Locality.com has crunched the numbers and determined that Pittsburgh charges high prices for manicures, pedicures and dry cleaning.
Locality.com CEO Jay Shek explained just exactly how these calculations were made. He states that the website compares prices, availability, reviews, location and hours using third party information from sites like Google Maps and Yelp.
From hair cuts, to dry cleaning and pet care, Locality helps users compare over one million local businesses in 10,000 cities nationwide. Based off of that information, they created a unique pricing data for the services that “yuppies” use.
Yuppie stands for “young urban professional.”
The Locality.com’s Yuppie Price Index is an economic indicator that tracks the annual cost of a group of typical yuppie services in the top 30 cities around the United States. Those typical services include haircuts, blowouts, manicures/pedicures, massages, facial waxing, dry cleaning, pet boarding, gym memberships and yoga classes.
“Pittsburgh ranking 15th as most expensive is not a bad thing, it’s actually closer to the middle,” said Shek. He continues that cities like San Francisco, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Raleigh, N.C. ranked higher on the list.
The index revealed that yuppies tend to spend more money on personal care services. Many of the services that they covered in this research were fairly affordable for residents.
Shek suggested that their numbers revealed larger cities who have more competition for services were able to bring their price down to be more reasonable. Whereas smaller cities who have a limited number of places like dry cleaners, can set a higher price for their service.
“You can go on to Locality.com and find, look at what dry cleaner or spa or hair salon that you use now and see if there’s another one that’s nearby that might be a better value, highly rated and costs less” said Shek.
