1 Dead, 1 Injured In South Side Crash

SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - Part of East Carson Street was shut down for hours Thursday morning after a violent crash on the South Side.

According to police, the accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. at the intersection of East Carson and Hot Metal Streets.

An orange Chevy Cobalt was turning left onto Hot Metal when it collided with a white Ford pickup that was travelling west on East Carson.

A 47-year-old man had to be cut from his vehicle. He was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The other driver was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital with a head injury.

It's not clear who, if anyone, was at fault.

Police photographed the scene and interviewed witnesses.

They are planning to review surveillance tapes from cameras on at least two nearby buildings.

East Carson was shut down between 28th and Hot Metal Streets for much of the early morning rush. It reopened around 8 a.m.

An autopsy was planned for today on the 47-year-old man.

The names of those involved have not been released.
